Welcome, Mark Schreiber!

The GameMaki Team welcomes our latest team member, Mark Schreiber, who will be based in the US!

He started out as an avid GameMaki user in the past month, and later began reaching out to us through email to share what he thought. This soon escalated into several conversations about the future of GameMaki and now, he’s part of GameMaki’s future!

Say hello to Mark!

1. What drew you to GameMaki and how did you discover us?

I happened upon GameMaki quite by chance, through a link in a repost, and stayed three hours. I’m not really much into video and social games. I had tried Idle Worship the night before, and while it was fun, I had to decide between the time commitment it required and normal life. GameMaki, however, was a completely different experience. Most of the time I spent not on GameMaki itself but on thinking about how I would claim challenges, taking pictures, looking through old ones. Rather than shutting me off from reality it compelled me to look around with new eyes.

2. What motivated you to write to us back then?

I realized you were doing something important here, instantly familiar but in a new way. Because these are the kinds of free-form games we make up as kids, or when we play with our kids, or when college buddies get together. But you don’t have to be in the same room at the same time for GameMaki. You don’t even have to be in the same country. And you can meet new people, as well as play with your friends and family. I wanted to tell the team I thought this was a revolutionary use of the technology. With other social gaming there’s a learning curve. With GameMaki you already know the rules.

3. How do you feel about being a part of the GameMaki team?

You know how most people write “team player” on their resume? Well I’m not one of them. I’ve never even had a resume. The last time I belonged to a team was when I was twelve and played baseball. But with GameMaki I’d finally found a team I wanted to join.

4. So, tell us more about you!

I’ve been writing books since I was a child, mostly novels. I’ve run several businesses, including my uncle’s internal medicine practice in Columbus, Ohio, where I currently live. My girlfriend lives in Costa Rica with her two boys, now mine also, and when I fix their iPad next visit I’ll be able to play GameMaki with them. I’ve always been insatiably curious, looking for new ways to express my creativity. And I challenge anyone to find a more fun way to do that than by playing GameMaki.

You can check out what Mark has been doing on GameMaki.

Also, expect to see him lurking around this blog more often. (: He’ll be our guest writer for all things gamification, so expect good things to come.

Take on these great weekend challenges!

Workaholics, perhaps it’s finally time to put an end to your procrastination for a work-free weekend. This is also a challenge for us, the GameMaki team, because we don’t really ‘work’ here! Work can always wait, but time won’t. So make the best out of these two days that you have.

What better way to end off your week than with some great challenges! Here are some of our hand-picked challenges for you. Feel free to contribute too by leaving a comment here or posting it straight to GameMaki!

When was the last time you cooked for your family? :)

Difficulty level: 5/5! Can you resist checking your Facebook and Twitter?

Non-singaporeans can also complete this challenge by hanging out at neighbourhood benches!

Snap away and bring on the Asian pride!

Great for some me-time.

Be a tourist in your own country!

And lastly, Mother’s Day falls on this coming May the 13th! Our user, Joanna Tham, has a simple challenge for you on that!

Get some ideas from our users who have claimed this!

Have a great weekend y’all! See you on GameMaki!

A note from an appreciative player!

When our Head Chef decided to put up the “Draw a sketch of me” challenge a few months back, he certainly wasn’t prepared for the different interpretations of himself.

So, when he laid eyes on Chien Yee’s claim yesterday, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“Wow, she’s made me look so fit!” said the Head Chef.

Yes folks, our Head Chef is in reality, rather pudgy … which is why you usually see most of his head and nothing else. (Even the GameMaki Team is struggling to understand why the Head Chef looks that way because … how can anyone even get chubby on sushi?!)

Either way, she’s made the Head Chef a very happy man. And the team, even happier!

Fan drawing!

Thanks for the love and support, Chien Yee! And yes, we’ll strive to bring the Android version out to you soon! :D

Until then, folks … keep sending those drawings in! If you make the Head Chef happy again, we’ll feature you on this blog and that is a promise!

GameMaki at The Internet Show 2012

It was an awesome past three days at Suntec Convention Centre Hall 404 (umm, no errors there though) as we took part in The Internet Show – a tradeshow dedicated to internet business for both large corporations and SMEs – which wrapped up just yesterday.

Oh, hello!
Oh, hello!

Our booth was at a pretty good location – right in front of Seminar Theatre 1. Which meant we could watch all the scheduled seminars for the day from the comfort of our own booth … or perhaps not, because we had a steady traffic of people dropping by to talk to us. We really felt the love. (:

Thanks to all who dropped by. We really enjoyed sharing about GameMaki and our passion for gamification with you guys.

The flurry of activity at our booth.
The flurry of activity at our booth.

It was an impressive show on the whole – easily one of the most well-organized tradeshows despite its sheer scale (it took up two whole levels of the convention centre). During our freer periods, we took turns exploring and were amazed by the plethora of different exhibitors at the show – ranging from software to basic hardware, to amazing hardware innovations (like a machine that can detect your gender by scanning your physique and subsequently push items you’d be interested in based on your gender) and service providers.

Many thanks to Simon Geenty, the organizer of the tradeshow for providing us with the booth space and for all the assistance rendered! Shoutout to Kristine, organizer of WalkaboutSG for introducing us to Simon and The Internet Show as well.

Also, shout-outs to Bubbly, whose booth was right next to us. It was great chatting with you guys too and thanks for the demo. All the best!
